Academic Contests
The MLCCC Weekend School holds several academic contests each year to promote students'
interest in Chinese language learning by challenging them to realize their full
Chinese language potential.
MLCCC Chinese/English Essay Contest
The contest is open to CHL grades 2 and up, all CSL levels, and English Writing class students. (For English Writing class students, all the requirements are the same except the students write in English.)
CHL 2nd grade to 5th grade: A Picture Story of your chosen topic (minimum 250 characters).
CHL 6th grade and above: Essay of your chosen topic (minimum 500 characters).
CSL level I to III: A Picture Story of your chosen topic (minimum 150 characters).
CSL level IV and above: Essay of your chosen topic (minimum 350 characters).
English Writing Class: Please consult with your English Writing teacher for details.
Students can write about anything that happens around them: for example, their favorite animal/thing/person, their favorite place/space, their most memorable trip/event, etc. Essay submissions must be typed. Picture stories can be drawn and hand written.
Submissions will be graded by a panel consisting primarily of teachers. Grading will be based on the Pennsylvania Writing Assessment Rubric, which evaluates five areas: Focus, Content, Organization, Style, and Conventions.
Participants will receive participation awards. Top performers will be awarded at the End of Year School Assembly.
MLCCC Chinese Character Recognition Contest
The MLCCC Chinese Character Recognition Contest will be annually. It is open to
all CHL Chinese Grade 1 students and above and to all CSL Chinese students.
For Heritage class students, each student will be randomly given 150 words from
the review word list, 100 of them are from their own grade level, 50 from the
previous grade. (1st graders will be tested 100 words) Participants must read out the words instantly
and accurately.
For CSL students, each student will be randomly given 150 words. 100 of them are
from their own grade level, 50 each from the previous levels. (The level I students
will be tested 100 words from their own level) Participants must read out the words
in Chinese and translate into English instantly and accurately.
A reward will be presented to each of the winners of the contests at the end of
the school year assembly.
