Dear Parents,

Thank you to our beautiful dance troupes for the wonderful performances at the GPCSU New Year Gala last Saturday! Both adult and children's programs stood out among all participating teams! Special thanks to our dance instructor Jing Xiaoyang Laoshi for having done such a thorough preparation, and to all our parents and children of the dance teams, thank you for showing off the MLCCC pride! We are very proud of you!

Details:

1. Free Financial Seminar on Education Fund, Retirement Plan and More From Past Popular Speaker Mr. Wei Yong 1PM - 3PM in Room 146
   Mr. Wei Yong has held several seminars at MLCCC in the past and his popular speaker reputation is well deserved from the topics he has covered. So don’t miss this chance to catch up with him and his presentation again.
   
   His topics will include education fund like 529, Coverdell etc., college financial aid, tax efficiency planning, retirement planning, life insurance, and other financial topics you can think of.
   
   我们中国人常说：你不理财， 财不理你。家庭理财就像一盘棋, 如何通盘考虑, 做好短期, 中期及长期计划至关重要。 本讲座涉及我们在美国遇到的各种的财务问题, 例如:
   
   1. 如何为孩子选择教育基金(529, Coverdell,…)？美国高校奖学金，助学金的特点？如何申请并最大限度地获得助学金？收入高就一定申请不到助学金吗？
   
   2. 如何省税与缓税? 新的税收政策对我们有何影响？如何做好Tax efficiency规划？
   
   3. 如何有效运用各种退休计划（401(k), IRA, Roth IRA, …）为自己的未来做出好的规划？如何控制投资风险? 如何做到Tax-Free Retirement?
   
   4. 终身寿险不仅有保护生命，保障家庭的作用，还有很多税上的好处。如果合理运用，投资得当，其中的现金部分可以作为退休、教育等方面的补充。你知道如何有效利用这些好处吗？
   
   
2. MLCCC Chinese Speech Contest This Sunday 2:30 - 3:50pm at Room 166
   The students do not have to stay for the whole time for the contest. They may leave after they done their part. If the participants do not have school until 3pm, please come at 2:30pm. If the participants have Public Speaking Class, they will compete during their class time. Otherwise, we will put the students out from their classes for 10 minutes to compete.
   
   Summary of the rules:
   * The piece needs to be recited from memory.
   * Each speech should be within 3 minutes.
   * There is no specific rule on the style of the piece, for example, it can be a story, a poem, a tongue twister, or some other style.
   * The judges will be looking at pronunciation, tone, content, fluency, and presentation (dress/attire of the contestant can affect the presentation score).
   * For students who have not registered but are interested, please register ASAP at this link

   All students who are currently in our Chinese classes (CHL or CSL) and Public Speaking classes are welcome to participate. The students will be divided into five groups:
   Heritage 1st - 3rd grade,
   Heritage 4th - 6th grade,
   Heritage 7th grade and above,
   CSL (Chinese as a Second Language) 1st - 3rd level,
   CSL 4th - 7th level.
   
   
3. 24 Game Preliminary Round This Sunday During Recess - Volunteer Judges Needed
   We received great responses for our 24 Game registration. The game pairings will be sent out to the registered children’s families soon. If you registered your child, but do not hear from us about the schedule and the pairing arrangement before the weekend, please let us know.
   
   For those registered children who normally arrive at school for 2pm class, please arrive this Sunday at 1:45pm to compete in the game, and let us know you are doing so.
   
   For those registered children who normally arrive at school for 3pm class, please arrive this Sunday at 2:45pm to compete in the game, and let us know you are doing so.
   
   Game rule is as follows:
   If there is a grade gap between the two players, the lower grader starts the game with the number of points equal to the grade gap.
   1. Whoever reaches 8 points first wins the game, unless the grade gap is >=3, then whoever reaches 10 points first wins the game.
   2. If you motion to answer but do not give the correct answer within 2 seconds, your opponent receives the point.
   3. Participants who pre-register receive $2 school dollars regardless of winning or losing. Participants who join on the spot receive $1 school dollar.
   4. We will award the Grand Champion $50 school dollars, $30 school dollars for Runner-Up and each grade’s top player $10 school dollars.
   
   Also, we need at least 10 game judges to run the game. If you can help out, please let us know. Thank you in advance!
   
   
4. Looking for Parents to Join Choir to Perform for Gala - Practice at 2:15pm this Sunday
   For those parents who like to sing, we are organizing a parents choir to perform《我的中国心》and《难忘今宵》 as a closing song at our Chinese New Year Gala. If you would like to join us, please come to the admin’s desk this Sunday at 2:15pm. Our CHL 3rd grade teacher Li, Wen will instruct and coordinate. No chorus skills are needed, just bring your enthusiasm and passion!
   
   
5. School Store Opens This Week
   Bring your school dollars and come to school store to shop! Store managers on duty: Jessica Zhu, William Qi, Rachel Meng, Max Wang.
   
   
6. PTO Sponsored 虹成 King’s Village Food on Sale This Week
   Authentic Chinese food from 虹成 King’s Village will be here again to save you cooking time and effort and satisfy your taste buds. Stop by the station, you can definitely find something you like!
   
   
7. 2016 MLCCC Chinese New Year Gala - Looking for more performances and sponsors
   Our 2016 Chinese New Year Gala is on Sunday afternoon 2/7/2016, right at GVHS. This is a free admissions event for all people of the Greater Philadelphia area who would like to experience and celebrate this wonderful Chinese holiday with us. The Gala includes two parts: New Year’s Show (1pm-3pm) in auditorium and Culture Fair (3pm-5pm) in cafeteria. Last year, over 1,000 people attended our gala.
   
   We are currently seeking performances for this year’s show. If you or anyone you know are interested in performing on the stage, please let us know. We are looking for something that represents authentic Chinese culture. Culture fair activities are also under preparation. If you have any ideas that could improve our culture fair, please feel free to share with us.
   
   We are also looking for sponsors and businesses that would like to place ads in our beautifully designed Gala program booklet. If you know of anyone who would like to be a sponsor, please have him/her contact us.
   
   
8. 诗艺之星—全美青少年华文诗词插画大赛 - US Youth Chinese Poetry Illustration Contest

   由天心艺术生活学社(Ecoheart Art Society) 、美华文学(Meihua Literati) 主办，北加州中文学校联合会参与协办的〈诗艺之星—全美青少年华文诗词插画大赛(US Youth Chinese Poetry Illustration Contest)〉活动已揭开序幕，目前正在接受报名中。此次比赛的主题是: 我最爱的唐诗300首。
   
   参赛方法十方简单，奖励方式又相当丰富，绝对值得让孩子们一试。参赛者只需从唐诗300首一书中，挑选出一首自己最喜爱的诗，绘制一幅可阐述自己对此首诗的理解和感受的插画，再把插画拍照，电邮至大会收件邮箱即可info.ecoheartsociety@yahoo.com。
